MCS2000 index Motorola index Back to Home | MCS2000 UHF S-split (450-470 MHz) or VHF K-split (146-174 MHz) CPS Hex Edits for the Ham Bands By Jacob Nagel ADØJA |
The S-split and K-split MCS2000 radios work great in the ham bands; the only needed modification is a hex edit to the CPS. If you try to program an out-of-band frequency WITHOUT this edit, the CPS will say the frequency is invalid and will not allow you to write the code plug to the radio.
These hex edits can be adapted for out-of-band operation for the MTS2000 hand-held CPS.
Items Needed:
- MCS2000 CPS R02.03.00 NOTE: if you program an MCS2000 with the latest CPS R02.03, don't program with older CPS or RSS, otherwise you WILL brick the radio.
- Hex Workshop (free trial available at hexworkshop.com)
First, navigate to 'C:Program FilesMotorolaMCS MTS 2000 ProductsMCS2000 CPS' and make a backup of the MCS2000.exe file.
Next, install Hex Workshop and launch it.
UHF S-split Modifications:
Click the Open button and select MCS2000.exe in the 'C:Program FilesMotorolaMCS MTS 2000 ProductsMCS2000 CPS' folder
Select the Edit menu tab then select Replace.
To extend the band split of the UHF S-Split radio from 450 MHz to 430 MHz, enter the following:
In the Replace window, make sure Type is set to Hex Values. Next enter 8074D21A in the Find entry box. Then, enter 8047A119 in the Replace entry box. Click OK. You should find and replace six instances of 8074D21A. Click on the image for a larger view. [Technical note from the editor: these are 4-byte Intel-format long (integer) values.]
Now, just save MCS2000.exe and close Hex Workshop. The MCS2000 CPS should allow you to normally program UHF ham frequencies without complaining.
VHF K-split Modifications:
Click the Open button and select MCS2000.exe in the 'C:Program FilesMotorolaMCS MTS 2000 ProductsMCS2000 CPS' folder
Select the Edit menu tab then select Replace.
To extend the band split of the VHF K-split radio from 146 MHz to 144 MHz, enter the following:
In the Replace window, make sure Type is set to Hex Values. Next enter 80C8B308 in the Find entry box. Then, enter 00449508 in the Replace entry box. Click OK. You should find and replace two instances of 80C8B308. Click on the image for a larger view.
Now, just save MCS2000.exe and close Hex Workshop. The MCS2000 CPS should allow you to normally program VHF ham frequencies without complaining.
Paul K2PMS sent this tip: This same procedure can be used for 900 MHz radios. Doing a search for 9428BB37 and replacing it with C0E54037 will expand the receive and simplex ranges down to 927.000 MHz. Doing a search for AC3CC335 and replacing it with C0AFD235 will expand the transmit up to 903.000 MHz. Remember to change all instances. It worked great in CPS R02.02.00.
